It’s a dreary day here, and the view from my window seems a little extra overgrown today. You know that pull chain on a fan/light? Mine got stuck and I can’t turn on the light in my room. I also am wearing pants that are not clean (thank God I found one last pair of clean underwear) and if you could see the rest of my room right now…
Okay I promise there is a point and it isn’t to try and complain or make you feel down - it’s to offer a little ray of sunshine if your day is as gloomy as the view out my window this morning. With so many things I need to do and address, I have had a habit of getting “stuck,” - as in literally walking in circles at times. But God has been giving me a strategy that is really effective and I wanted to share in case any of you have started your day or week in the doldrums too.
It’s a principle, and I think it may be as real as gravity - the principle of the ONE THING.
What is the ONE THING that is the most important, effective, life giving (whatever attribute you feel led to follow) thing that you could do with the biggest return for your time.
This is vastly different than a to-do list of all the things you could do. It isn’t even about the things you should do. Make that list, of the things you should or even must do, and then cut it in half. Then do that again. And again. Until you have drilled your well down to the ONE THING that needs to be in front of you. When you have finished this, you have found your living water for the day.
Pick one thing. Remove distractions. Finish.
REST. REPEAT.
Listen to these words from Jesus, and hear him calling your name today, “Rebecca, Rebecca,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” Luke 10:41-42 with a few edits from me.
In other translations it reads that many things are needed but only one thing is necessary. What is your one thing? Just for today…just for right now?
Interestingly I have a blog (that I don’t write on anymore) I started in 2014 named “The One Thing Mary Knew.” I guess it has taken about ten years for that principle to travel from my head to my heart.
For me today, the One Thing is probably going to be laundry - I mean, I just told you all I have is one pair of clean underwear and it’s on my body sooo…what can I say, sometimes our decisions just make themselves, eh?
Happy Monday friends. Praying we all find the rest and peace in our One Things.
I'm loving your words, thoughts, and the fact that you're sharing! What a gift for the world!!! Thank you!
