Isn’t it kinda funny…this world moves so fast and furious and we simultaneously try with all our might to stop it’s spinning and pretend like it’s flat (I’m not talking about flat earthers here by the way), but also want to experience the goodness of all the seasons. But of course without any of their downfalls or sufferings.
In industrialized countries, like America, we do everything we can to avoid feeling the seasons. Our thermostats hover around 70 degrees year round. We have heated and cooled seats in our cars. Hot pocket things you can use to keep your hands warm. Ski jackets that generate heat (I’m pretty sure I saw that somewhere.) Fans to go around our necks. Air conditioners to connect to our mattress to keep our beds cool, when it’s hot.
It is almost as if we try to eradicate the truth of the seasonal world we live in…but then…
…Spring starts springing…and we all notice don’t we?
Those who suffer with seasonal depression, immediately begin to feel the infusion of life the Spring sun brings. Even those who don’t spend winter months fighting off the blues feel life as it begins to awaken with new buds and birds all around.
It’s just kinda funny…how we fight so hard to remove ourselves from our connection to the earths ebbs and flows in one way, but are still so affected by them. I wonder what would happen if we lived our lives in a way that leaned into the seasons instead of tried to fight them. Resting, prepping, harvesting, feasting, fasting…in step with the world around us. I bet we wouldn’t be so tired all the time…
I have a little more to say about this, but it’s all jumbled up with some thoughts about this homeless couple I’ve been watching on TikTok who I’m pretty sure are squatting on land somewhere close to Long Island, New York. 😂 Maybe if I unravel all that one day, I’ll share…but for now, I’m just going to continue noticing the seasons around me as best I can, even if it’s just out my window or on my rickety, worn down front porch!
